Planning for LAMOT in 2012 Begins

The LAMOT Board of Directors met for their first off-season meeting on October 30th. Thanks to our 2011 sponsors, Mighty Taco, Emerling Chevrolet, Auto Wrench Connection, and Trank Real Estate & Insurance, the board was able to award all qualifying drivers a combined total of over $5,000 in point fund money for the commitment of running a full season with the division. 2011 saw an increase in participation with two more drivers qualifying for the year end point fund than in 2010.

While several topics were discussed, some of which will be continued at later meetings, a few changes were confirmed. Race Director Butch Williams and driver T.J. Johnson have resigned from their positions as board members. Johnson was a founding member of LAMOT who assisted new drivers become acclimated with late model racing, while Williams was active with officiating duties during the past two seasons. Also, Nick Crassi has stepped down from his role as Vice President. However, he will remain a member on the LAMOT board. The current board members would like to thank Williams and Johnson for their service and dedication to the division. They are also currently seeking to diversify and expand board membership. Anyone interested in joining is welcome to apply via the lamotracing.com website here. A printable version of the application is also available for anyone wishing to complete one by hand. All applications must be submitted by the date of the next board meeting, which is December 4th. Members of the board each have one vote in decisions regarding the division, including President Al Morrison. Any member affiliated with a team/driver will abstain from any voting that may impact a single driver directly.

2011 was a year of consistency and stability. The division continued its yearly increase of average cars per race to just over ten, which is a new high. The division also saw increases in the number of different drivers, feature winners, and lap leaders as compared to 2010, while the number of cautions per race and caution-less races remained the same. Holland reintroduced heat races to their program in 2011 which saw 8 different drivers taking home qualifying wins.

Heading into 2012 LAMOT will be celebrating five years of racing thanks to Holland Speedway, the sponsors, and drivers. Going forward the division is committed to the mandated 602 engine, non-adjustable shocks, and Goodyear tires which have been the cornerstone of the rulebook. Beginning in mid-November a late model show car with supporting logos will be on display at the McKinley Mall.

Among the topics discussed at the meeting were a ‘one and done’ policy for incidents resulting in race ending damage, minor changes to the rulebook, and a plan to schedule and fund two special fifty lap events for the division at Holland Speedway. The extra distance races are tentatively scheduled for June 2nd and August 4th in 2012.

All members of the racing community, including fans are encouraged to share their opinions or concerns. Individual contact information for each board member is listed on the lamotracing.com website along with our feedback form.  More updates will be provided periodically throughout the off-season. Thank you for supporting the Late Models at Holland.
