JOE EVANS EARNS FIRST HOLLAND
VICTORY OF 2010 - JOHNSON, MYERS, BARBER WIN AGAIN
After a season of good, but not great, runs,
punctuated by some frustrating outings, Joe Evans of Holland, NY
finally had it all come together at his hometown track on Saturday
evening, capturing his first NASCAR Ragingwolf.com Pro Modified
feature race of the season at the Holland NASCAR Motorsports
Complex.
Evans was one of two first time 2010 winners, as second generation
driver Tony Carbone of West Seneca, NY not only won his first of the
season, but earned a first career victory in the 4-cylinder Hornet
main. All other victory lane visitors were enjoying repeat trips
to the winner’s circle. T.J. Johnson of South Wales, NY scored his
fifth Late Models of Tomorrow victory of the year, while Zach Myers
of East Concord, NY notched his third Bank of Holland Charger win of
the summer. Camden Barber of Bliss, NY picked up his second Holland
win in the Casey’s TQ Midget Series main, and Dave Reese, Jr. of
Glenwood, NY raced to his second M&M U-Pull-It Figure 8 Car win of
the season.
A four car skirmish interrupted the initial green flag of the 40 lap
NASCAR Ragingwolf.com Pro Modified main, but on the second attempt
at the start, Joe Evans outdragged front row starting mate Don King
to put his Emerling Dealerships/TW Signs Troyer in front. Patrick
Emerling wasted no time in moving forward from his 7th starting
spot, as the 2010 Decker 100 winner jumped into second on lap 3 and
by the 8th circuit, was putting pressure on Evans for the top slot.
However, Emerling’s race would end early, as his potent racer
coasted to the infield with mechanical issues on the 14th go-round.
This put last Saturday’s winner, Amy Catalano, into the runner-up
position, and she started to close on the ˝ straightaway lead Evans
was enjoying at this point. Catalano was within a couple of car
lengths on the 25th lap when Kevin Miller lost the handle on his
racer directly in front of the leaders. Both lead cars were able to
avoid Miller, but the ensuing restart gave Catalano a chance to
wrest the lead from Evans. However, Evans was able to get a good
jump at the fresh green to retain the lead, but Catalano was not
done. She put constant pressure to the inside of the Evans racer,
waiting for Evans to make the one bobble that would give her the
opening to race on by. Evans did not provide that opportunity,
though - he ran a mistake-free final 15 laps to hold a car length
advantage over Catalano at the checkers. Points leader Mike
Fiebelkorn, Jr. came back from his involvement in the opening lap
shuffle to place third.
Rookie driver Brandon Glover took advantage of a lap 3 restart to
race by Sean Dolan for the lead in the 25 lap Late Models of
Tomorrow main. The teen-aged pilot had an impressive outing,
leading until the 15th circuit before past champ T.J. Johnson came
calling. Johnson managed to work his Trank Real Estate and
Insurance Monte Carlo under Glover in turn four to motor into the
lead and roll away for the win. Glover held off late race
challenges from veterans Mike Ticco and Eldon King III to record the
runner-up position, his best finish of the season. Ticco edged King
for the third slot.
Zach Myers raced his Upstate Automotive Group/Nova Glass Malibu by
Ted Welshans for the lead on the seventh circuit of the 30 lap Bank
of Holland Chargers go, and drove away to a relatively uncontested
victory. The final 28 laps of the event ran caution-free. Ted
Welshans kept the fast-moving Myers in his sights, but was unable to
make a challenge to re-take the lead, and had to settle for a
season-best second place finish. Brother Nik Welshans had his best
finish of the season as well, with a third place showing.
Camden Barber vaulted his Bliss Garage/Bliss International Speedway
mount from his fourth starting spot to first on the initial lap of
the Casey’s TQ Midget Series feature race, and would roll away for
the win in the caution-free 20 lap event. Timex Morgan would work
his way from the 13th starting spot to take second late in the race,
but could not chase down the fast Barber entry. Jim Fleischman
drove a strong race throughout to place third.
Trouble for the two drivers who had dominated the 4-cylinder Hornet
division in 2010 opened up the door for a first time winner.
Two-time victor Eric Brown was caught up in a rough lap 16 back
chute melee with Bob Marzec and Joe Mastrocicco III, ending his
night early, while during that caution period, points leader and
five-time winner George Quintana was forced to pit to change a flat
tire. It looked as if Ashley Kirchberger might be the first Queen
Bee driver to outright win a 2010 Hornet main, as she raced by Dave
Reese, Jr. for the top spot on lap 13 and opened up a lead
advantage. However, on the lap 17 restart, Tony Carbone began to
put the pressure on Kirchberger, and just 3 laps from the lap 30
checkers, made a bold three-wide move in lapped traffic, squeezing
his Vic’s Auto Service/Dago Fast Fabrication Honda into the lead on
the extreme inside groove to race on for his first career win.
Kirchberger had to be content with a second place overall finish and
her fourth Queen Bee win of the year. Jeff Szafraniec drove a
steady race to take third, while Dylan Carbone, cousin of the
winner, had a best ever fourth place finish.
Dave Reese, Jr. led the 12 lap, caution-free M&M U-Pull-It Figure 8
Car main from start to finish, keeping his Shanley
Collision/Majestic Pools Dodge away from troubles at the “x” for the
win. Points leader Jason Adams chased Reese home in second, while
past champ Mike Eckam took third.
News and Notes – The racing program was pushed along due to the
forecast of rain moving into the area by mid-evening – fortunately,
no rainfall was recorded in the vicinity until the very late evening
hours and the entire program was competed in just under 2 ˝ hours
... Rich Carnes, the Charger points leader going into the night, was
involved in a lap two tangle, and later, had right front suspension
problems, ending his race early ... continued bad luck for past
Charger champ Jim Loffredo, as a flat tire knocked him out of a top
five position ... welcome back to Kraig Heroth, as the former Cup
Lites racer from eastern New York made his first Holland Pro
Modified start ... yellow flags were sparse through the night, as
the TQ Midget and Figure 8 Car mains went caution-free, the Late
Model and Charger mains each had but a single, early race caution,
and the Pro Modified and Hornet features each had just two yellow
flag slow-downs.
Racing will continue at the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex on
Saturday, August 21st. The racing will start with the 3rd annual
Bar Cup Challenge, as tavern and restaurant owners and bar maids
from various Western New York establishments will compete on the
oval in Speedway provided 4-cylinder racers. The program will
continue with a full round of racing by the NASCAR Raginwolf.com Pro
Modifieds, Late Models of Tomorrow, Bank of Holland Chargers,
4-cylinder Hornets and Queen Bees, and the M&M U-Pull-It Figure 8
Cars. Pit gates will open at 4:45, grandstand gates at 5:15, and
racing will get underway at 7:15. Any fan showing a ticket stub
from the 2010 Erie County Fair, currently in progress, will receive
$5 off admission price on the 21st. For more information, contact
