JANKOWIAK FIRST HOLLAND PRO MOD
REPEAT WINNER OF 2011; KING, BROWN, ADAMS ADD TO VICTORY TOTALS
Andy Jankowiak of Tonawanda, NY became the first National Overhead
Door NASCAR Pro Modified feature winner to visit victory lane a
second time at the Holland Motorsports Complex in 2011 as he
captured the open-wheeled 30 lap main event on Saturday evening,
July 30th.
In other action, points leader Eldon King III of Freedom, NY took
his fourth Late Model feature victory of the year, while Rich Carnes
of Cheektowaga, NY notched his first of the season in the Bank of
Holland Charger main. Eric Brown of Holland scored his fifth
4-cylinder Hornet win of the season and Jason Adams of East Aurora,
NY made it three straight victories in the M&M U-Pull-It Figure 8
Car main. Camden Barber of Bliss, NY was officially named as the
winner of the Casey’s TQ Midget Series main.
2010 Pro Modified champ Mike Fiebelkorn, Jr. raced by Dave Catalano
for the lead on a lap 2 restart, and quickly opened up a large lead
advantage, but Amy Catalano and Andy Jankowiak were on the move. A
long stretch of green flag laps allowed Jankowiak and Catalano to
close on Fiebelkorn, and on the 19th circuit, Andy J. was able to
complete the winning move around the outside of Fiebelkorn. A late
race restart did not deter Jankowiak, as he was able to open up a
lead advantage in the late stages to hold a comfortable margin of
victory. Catalano and Fiebelkorn put on a good show for second,
with Catalano getting the advantage in the latter stages of the
event. Fiebelkorn held off a late race challenge from George Decker
100 winner Kirk Totten for third.
Eldon King III raced his D&H Excavating mount by Nick Crassi for the
lead on the 12th go-round of the 20 lap Late Models of Tomorrow
main, and kept a challenging Troy Williams at bay over the closing
laps to record the victory. Williams, who was piloting the John
McClurg Dodge for the evening, placed second, while Crassi, who led
the first 11 circuits of the caution-free event, placed third.
Rich Carnes took advantage of a lap 6 restart to race his Randy’s
Auto Repair/Slippy’s Collision Monte Carlo by Tim Northen for the
top spot in the 30 lap Bank of Holland Charger main, and proceeded
to open up a wide lead. However, Mike “The Cowboy” Flaig was on the
move over the final 25 caution-free laps and whittled the huge lead
down to nothing with just two to go. Flaig tried to work under
Carnes over the final two circuits, but was unsuccessful in his
efforts, as Carnes took a 3/4 car length margin of victory over
Flaig at the checkers. Late race contact between Tommy Catalano and
Jim Loffredo in a third place battle resulted in previous week’s
winner Matt Welshans getting the number three slot.
Timex Morgan raced his mount by Andy Jankowiak for the lead on a lap
9 restart in the 20 lap Casey’s TQ Midget Series main. Jankowiak
would be forced to park his racer with engine issues two laps later,
handing second place to Camden Barber. However, Barber was unable
to reel in the high-flying Morgan over the remaining laps.
Unfortunately, the Morgan entry had to forfeit the victory due to a
post-race tech inspection issue, so that Barber was declared the
race winner. Owen Bednasz continued his steady improvement behind
the wheel with a personal Holland best second place finish.
Samantha Lutz opened up a big lead early in the 30 lap 4-cylinder
Hornet main, but fuel pick-up problems would strike on a couple of
occasions, allowing both Eric Brown and Chris Powers to slip on by
on the 12th lap. Powers kept hounding Brown, but was unable to make
a serious bid for the lead. At the checkers, Brown held a five car
length advantage over “Carbone Crew” member Powers, while Chris’
cousin Tony Carbone took third. Lutz held on for the number four
slot.
Jason Adams grabbed the lead on the initial lap of the M&M U-Pull-It
Figure 8 car main and had no trouble in leading the distance in his
Double T Painting mount for his fourth win of the year. Jason Eck
placed second, with Jerry Toms taking third.
News and Notes – Reports from the Late Model ranks indicate a driver
change is in the offing for the Gordon Trank owned #99 - the team
was not in attendance on Saturday, but a replacement for T.J.
Johnson could be in the car as early as next Saturday ... Andy
Jankowiak can’t seem to string together solid rides for the Pro
Modified and the TQ Midget on the same night - after winning the TQ
main a week earlier, his Pro Mod suffered from mechanical issues,
while this week, the TQ Midget had engines woes while he raced to
the Pro Modified win ... another member of the Carbone Crew made his
debut in the 4-cylinder Hornet division - Carbone cousin Tim Boyce
stayed out of trouble and finished 16th in his first ever outing in
a race car - Tim is the fifth family member now competing in the
Hornet class, while his uncle Joe Carbone is in competition with his
Pro Modified.
Racing will roar back into action at the Holland Motorsports Complex
on Saturday, August 6th, as Towne Automotive and Whelen Engineering
will present a full card of action featuring the National Overhead
Door NASCAR Pro Modifieds, Late Models of Tomorrow, Bank of Holland
Chargers, Casey’s TQ Midgets, 4-cylinder Hornets and the M&M
U-Pull-It Figure 8 Cars. Qualifying events will get underway at
