EMERLING, KING, WELSHANS, MAPES ON TOP AT
HOLLAND’S 2011 OPENER
Patrick Emerling of Boston, NY has been establishing a name for
himself along the Eastern Seaboard as an up-and-coming short track
racer. On Sunday afternoon, Patrick returned to his original
stomping grounds at the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex to
capture the 35 lap main for the NASCAR National Overhead Door Pro
Modifieds.
In other action at the McKinley Mall 2011 season opener at the
Western New York oval, 2009 champ Eldon King III of Freedom, NY
scored the win in the Late Models of Tomorrow main, Ted “Big Show”
Welshans of West Falls, NY captured the initial Bank of Holland
Charger feature win, and three time defending series title holder
Justin Mapes of Franklinville, NY was victorious in the Casey’s TQ
Midget Series feature race. Past champ Eric Brown of Holland
notched the 4-cylinder Hornet honors, while Jason Adams of Glenwood,
NY took the initial M&M U-Pull-It Figure 8 Car main of the year.
Kirk Totten and Neal Dietz, Jr. battled for the lead early in the
Pro Modified feature race, until contact on lap 5 sent the Totten
ride looping on the back chute. 2010 champ Mike Fiebelkorn, Jr.
inherited the lead at that point, with Emerling slotted in second.
Emerling was content to lay back a few car lengths from Fiebelkorn,
but once the event hit the ten to go mark, he began to make his
move, and managed to battle his Gauthier Blacktopping/Emerling
Dealerships mount by Fiebelkorn off the fourth turn on the 27th
circuit to claim the lead and drive on to the win. Fiebelkorn had
to be content with a second place finish, while Andy Jankowiak
claimed third. A tight battle for fourth between Dietz and Joe
Evans resulted in contact off the final turn, allowing Jeff Ruddy
and Totten to slip by and claim top five finishes.
2010 Late Models of Tomorrow champ T.J. Johnson raced by J.D.
Roberts for the Late Model lead on the 2nd circuit, but three
mid-race caution periods kept the field tight. On the final of the
re-starts, Eldon King III managed to work his D&H Excavating ride
under Johnson to grab the lead and ride on to the lap 25 checkered
flag. Johnson had to settle for second, with Nick Crassi scoring a
strong third.
Kris Hamann led the first 14 circuits of the 30 lap Bank of Holland
Charger main, but company was en route, as Rich Carnes, Jim Loffredo,
and Ted Welshans were heading to the front. Carnes found room to
the inside of Hamann on the 15th lap to claim the lead, with
Welshans following through to put his Swat Stoe/Klispies Motorsports
Malibu into second place. Loffredo, in turn, took third a lap
later. Welshans then needed three laps before getting by Carnes on
the top side of turn four, then began to open up some breathing
room, as Carnes and Loffredo tussled for second. Welshans held a 10
car length advantage at the checkers of the caution-free event,
while Loffredo edged Carnes for the runner-up slot.
Justin Mapes made a gutsy inside, three-wide move in his Steffan/Mapes
Racing entry to squeeze by Jonathan Reid and Andy Jankowiak for the
lead on lap 6, then held off a mid-race challenge from Dave Wollaber
to take the honors in the 20 lap feature race for the Casey’s TQ
Midget Series. Wollaber placed a tight second, with teammate Bobby
Holmes making some late race moves to claim third.
Though he arrived late and missed his 4-cylinder Hornet qualifying
heat, a deep in the field starting spot did not deter Eric Brown.
Brown diced through the field in his Bruce’s Automotive entry to
battle under Waylon Price for the lead on lap 18 of the 30 lap go,
then held off repeated challenges from Price and Sylvia Miszczak
through lapped traffic for the victory. Miszczak took Queen Bee
honors as the top finishing female driver with her second place
finish, just ahead of Price. Ashley Kirchberger and Ben Russo were
also in the mix at the front of the field to complete the top five
in the tightest finish of the afternoon. The race ran caution-free.
Brown nearly made it two wins for the day, but a last lap charge in
the 8 lap M&M U-Pull-It Figure Car main fell just short of Jason
Adams. Adams led the entire event, thwarting Brown’s late challenge
to earn the win.
News and Notes – Off-and-on drizzles interrupted pre-race practice
on three different occasions, but once the racing program was
underway, the sun emerged for a beautiful late afternoon of
competitive action ... Ted Welshans’ win was in stark contrast to
the fortunes of his three brothers also competing in the Charger
division - Matt, Tim, and Nik Welshans were all casualties of
various mechanical gremlins, and watched Ted drive to the victory
from infield parking spots.
The Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex will return to action with a
Memorial Day weekend doubleheader. Weekly racing action will shift
to the regular Saturday evening slot on May 28th. Qualifying will
get underway at 5:00, with main events starting at 7:05 pm. The
NASCAR National Overhead Door Pro Modifieds, Late Models of
Tomorrow, Bank of Holland Chargers, Casey’s TQ Midget Series,
4-cylinder Hornets, and the M&M U-Pull-It Figure 8 Cars will
comprise the program. On Monday, May 30th, the annual Faster
Pastor race will highlight the card, as ministers and preachers from
churches throughout Western New York will compete in speedway
provided 4-cylinder cars in fund-raising efforts for their parishes
and congregations. The INEX Legends will make a special appearance
in the racing program to follow, which will also include the Bank of
Holland Chargers and 4-cylinder Hornets. The Faster Pastor race
will get underway at 3:30, with the program of Legends, Chargers and
Hornets following. For more information, contact the Holland
office at (716)-537-2272 or visit the website at
